Flow Testing

Fire hydrants are required to be flow tested once every 5 years, as per local codes and standards. This is to ensure those system design requirements (such as minimum discharge flow and pressure) are still met at any given point across the system.  Flow testing fire hydrants is a critical aspect of ensuring the readiness and effectiveness of fire suppression systems in communities around the world. These services are essential for verifying the functionality and performance of fire hydrants, as well as assisting engineers and consultants in designing future stages of waterlines and/or sprinkler systems, ensuring that the required flows are available to provide sufficient protection to residents and property.

Understanding Flow Testing Fire Hydrants

Flow testing fire hydrants involves assessing the flow rates and pressure levels of water systems, using 2 fire hydrants at a minimum, one being a flow hydrant and one being a residual pressure fire hydrant. This process is typically conducted by trained professionals, such as firefighters, municipal water authorities, or certified flow testing technicians, using specialized equipment and procedures.

  1. Process of Flow Testing Fire Hydrants

 

  1. Preparation: Before conducting flow tests, technicians inspect hydrants for visible damage or obstructions and ensure that surrounding areas are clear of debris or vehicles. Safety precautions are implemented to protect personnel and bystanders during testing.
  2. Flow Measurement: Flow testing equipment, such as pitot tubes, pressure gauges, and flow meters, is used to measure water flow rates and pressure levels at each hydrant. 
  3. Data Analysis: Flow testing data is analyzed to evaluate the flow capacity, static pressure,  residual pressure, and distribution uniformity of hydrants.
  4. Reporting: Comprehensive flow testing reports are generated, documenting the results of each test, including flow rates, pressure readings, and observations. These reports serve as valuable records for maintenance planning, regulatory compliance, and emergency response purposes.
